Our contract

Our sales contract is one way we help ensure the safety and happiness of our CaliMaine Coons with their new families.

Our responsibilities

Protecting and preserving the Maine Coon breed is one of CaliMaine's most important responsibilities. Should you select a CaliMaine Coon to add to your family, we will provide you with a written contract that guarantees the health of your kitten at the time you take your CaliMaine Coon home with you. Our contract will also stipulate certain responsibilities for safeguarding your Maine Coon's health and happiness (in accordance with the Maine Coon Breeders Association's Code of Ethics).

Your responsibilities

Our contract recommends that you take your new kitten to your veterinarian for a wellness checkup within 48 hours after leaving our home as verification of the kitten's good health.

Our contract includes recommendations for food and litter to help insure a healthy and comfortable transition to a new home. Make sure that any changes in litter or food are introduced gradually. For good health, a supply of fresh water should be available at all times.

To maintain sanitary indoor living conditions, we recommend at least one litter box for every two cats in your household and daily scooping. We use a corn litter, since clumping and clay litters can be harmful if swallowed. Our CaliMaine Coons begin using a litter box at five weeks of age, so no litter training should be necessary. Regular, daily scooping is recommended, as cats are detered by a dirty litter box.

If for any reason you are unable to continue to care for your CaliMaine Coon, we require that you return the cat to us.

Other terms and conditions

We require that you have your CaliMaine Coon remain indoors at all times (unless traveling safely) and be neutered/spayed at an age that you and your veterinarian agree is a healthy age at which to perform the procedure (generally no earlier than six months of age, with ten months being our recommended age).

We prohibit de-clawing your Coon. If you are concerned about damage to your furniture, first make sure there are adequate scratching posts available. In addition, you should regularly trim your cat's nails. We will be happy to demonstrate if you have never done so before.
