More than a few people have asked us whether male Maine Coons are more affectionate. It remains a mystery to me how that rumor got started, but recognizing that each person has their own experiences with their pets, here is the way I answer that question...
I cannot honestly say that my males are more affectionate than my females. Indeed, both are equally likely to curl up with me for a nice nap.

Can you tell what the adult personality of a kitten will be like?
Whether the kitten is a male or female, you really cannot predict the ultimate personality of that adult cat. As the owner of a new kitten, it will largely be up to you to create positive experiences with your new kitten (or for your newly adopted older cat). In addition to a safe and comfortable introduction to its new environment, it is important to establish a bond by communicating with your Maine Coon, through voice and touch.
Here are a few more tips:
Observing the general behavior of all of the cats in the breeder's home will often provide some of the most useful information. Are the cats generally approachable? Do they respond well to being pet?
A well socialized kitten should be eager to approach you, especially if you are holding a cat toy in your hands. It is best to sit on the floor (closer to the kitten's level of sight). From the kitten's perspective, having someone tower over them can appear a little scary, even if the kitten is usually very outgoing.

Don't expect an eight- or twelve-week old kitten to enjoy being held and controlled when you pick the kitten up. A confident, well adjusted Maine Coon kittens may have a tendency to be either very active and energetic or sleepy and relaxed, with not too much in between.
Are the kitten's parents friendly and outgoing? Just keep in mind that sometimes mother cats are protective of their babies and may not be as outgoing to meet approaching strangers as they normally would be.
Is a male a better choice if I want a large Maine Coon?
It is not uncommon for males to get to 18 to 20 pounds or more, while females are generally 12 to 15 pounds, If you have never owned a Maine Coon, please keep in mind that for some, the sheer size of a male can be intimidating.
This breed is not only large in size, but are also very strong, and a Maine Coon may not hesitate to let you know if he or she is uncomfortable, unhappy, or frightened. Grooming a Maine Coon with too heavy a hand, for example, can make it difficult on both of you the next time you want to do a little touch up combing. Many people are more comfortable starting out with a female as their first Maine Coon. |
